Job Description Summary
The Engineering and Technology Division at Cuesta College is seeking a Full-Time Tenure Track Automotive Technology Instructor, that includes a leadership and limited teaching role in the Agricultural Mechanics department. While the candidate's primary responsibility will be teaching sections in the Automotive Technology Department in both Fall and Spring semesters, the candidate will also have additional college and division responsibilities, outlined below.

INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Effective teaching begins with good preparation. Faculty are responsible for choosing appropriate course materials, including resources at low or no cost to students, developing a student-centered equity-minded syllabus, one that adheres to the college-approved Course Outline of Record, outlines classroom expectations, and content to be covered; as well as creating a plan for content delivery, determining the best way to assess student learning, and assigning grades. It also includes respectful instructor-student communication, availability during office hours, and identifying and connecting students with college services and resources.

Subject Matter Preparation
Preference will be given to candidates who:
  • Have recent successful experience teaching college-level Automotive Technology courses in all, or almost all, of the following areas - Engine Mechanical, Manual Drivetrains/Transmissions, Automatic Transmissions, Chassis, Suspension and Alignment, Braking systems, Automotive Electrical and Electrical Accessories, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning systems, Engine Performance, and Emissions Controls (Smog Check), Automotive Business relationships.
  • Experience in Electric Vehicles, Hybrid vehicles, ADAS, and emerging transportation technologies is desired.
  • Have professional work experience in the field of Automotive Technology and Agricultural Mechanics.

Evidence of Outstanding Ability as a Teacher
Appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement that the candidate can provide that can be used to validate:
  • Commitment to staying up to date with the latest developments in Automotive Technology and/or Agricultural Mechanics and in collaborating with industry and/or professional organizations on curriculum and partnership development
  • The ability to continuously reflect on, evaluate, and improve teaching methods
  • The ability to organize and explain materials/instructions in ways appropriate to students' abilities and learning styles
  • The ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their own learning, promote development of critical thinking skills, and encourage students to become lifelong learners
  • The ability to use instructional methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration.
  • The ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of cultural, academic, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds
  • The ability to develop student learning outcomes and methods for assessing students' achievement of those outcomes
  • The enthusiasm for, understanding of, and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college
  • Familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology in Automotive Technology/Ag Mechanics, including online instruction
  • A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college

COLLEGE AND DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES
College and/or departmental responsibilities include the following activities:
  • Achieving and maintaining Cuesta College Distance Education certification
  • Assisting with the leadership role in the Automotive Department and leading the Agriculture Mechanics Department (i.e. scheduling, budgeting, equipment ordering)
  • Developing and updating courses and course/program curriculum
  • Serving on college committees and taskforces (Participatory Governance) per faculty contract
  • Researching and writing program review for Agricultural Mechanics and assisting with Automotive Technology program review.
  • Serving on peer evaluation and hiring committees as needed
  • Course scheduling for Automotive Technology and Agricultural Mechanics
  • Working collaboratively with full-time and part-time instructors in both departments
  • Collaborating with community about curriculum changes, job opportunities, or scholarship opportunities for students
  • Maintaining collegial, professional, and ethical conduct
  • Lead and/or assist in maintaining the Department's ASE Education Foundation Certification, per ASE timeline.
  • Organizing and leading annual advisory meetings in the subject matter areas
  • Regularly submitting assessment results into the college outcomes and assessments database
Selected applicants will be asked to interview via Zoom for a full-time tenure track position as an Automotive/Ag Mechanics instructor in the Engineering and Technology Division on Monday, July 12 or Tuesday, July 13, 2021. Second interviews will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, July 14, 2021. The selected applicant will begin their full-time teaching assignment in the 2021-2022 school year which begins on August 10, 2021. Assignments will be day, evening, and potentially online classes at the San Luis Obispo Campus, North County Campus in Paso Robles, South County Center in Arroyo Grande, or other sites in San Luis Obispo County.

Essential Functions & Qualifications
Required:
-Any bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution; AND-Two years of professional experience in the field.OR -Any associate's degree from an accredited institution;AND -Six years of professional experience in the field.OR
-The equivalent (candidates making application on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment, indicated on the Equivalency Process link listed in Additional Information).
OR
-A valid Community College credential in the discipline.

Applicants required to possess and maintain ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certification in the areas they will teach. ASE Mater Technician, and L1 Certification desired. Required to maintain 20 hours of industry training per year.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Teaching experience in the discipline, community college level preferred
  • Awareness of the philosophy and objectives of California Community Colleges
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students
  • Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus
  • Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in the Automotive/Ag Mechanics settings
  • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within Automotive/Ag Mechanics courses and topics
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices
