Description

This is a part-time classified pool for available assignments during the academic year. Applications are considered throughout the academic year and reviewed based on Department need. Assists the instructor during laboratory learning activities, and while the instructor is lecturing. Prepares materials and training aids and helps maintain shop equipment. Monitors student use of the shop areas, and safe usage of equipment and tools.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assist instructors in educational activities related to either Automotive Service Technology, or Auto Body Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology. Provide participatory guidance to students involved in hands-on learning activities. Monitor and enforce safe work practices. Help maintain tools and equipment relevant to the learning experience in the Automotive labs. Work with instructors closely to help plan repair processes for student projects, and oversee adherence to project plans. Maintain cooperative working relationships with College staff, other organizations and the public. Adhere to Department guidelines for safe usage of all equipment, and demonstrate proper hazardous waste disposal practices and environmental stewardship.

AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provide assistance to other department personnel as workload and staffing levels dictate. This generally refers to the Tool Crib. If a specialty tool is needed to perform the activity planned, make every effort to obtain the necessary tools as part of the planning for the repair.

MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Thorough technical knowledge related to instructional area.

Automotive Service Technology assistants should be well versed in basic maintenance procedures, lube, oil, filters, brake service, cooling systems, lighting, starting, and charging systems.

Auto Body Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology assistants should be experienced in all phases of collision repair, and more specifically auto restoration practices. Patch panels, welding, rust repair, metal forming, plastic fillers, paint prep and application may all be needed as student work through their projects. Familiarity with the spray booths and arrestor banks a plus. Some knowledge of environmental guidelines preferred, as well as hazardous material handling and disposal methods used by the Department.
Knowledge of all areas must be equivalent to:
High school plus two years' specialized training.
Any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES:

Valid Driver's License acceptable in the State of Oregon.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Current first aid card.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel,stoop, communicate, and reach and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility, Duties involve moving materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis. Infrequently may be required to move equipment, materials or vehicles weighing over 75 lbs. with assistance from other personnel, or using lifting equipment such as hoists or dolly carts.

WORK CONDITIONS:
Work location is an automotive repair facility. Noise levels are high, odors are present. Specific personal protective requirements are posted in areas of exposure. Safety glasses are required at all times.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision of other personnel is not a typical function assigned to this position.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general direction of the Department Chair.
